This year is going to be different for junior Jacob Deiter. As Deiter begins his third year of cross country, his goals and his attitude are running high.
"I hope to place in the top 10 at least at one meet, and I would also like to make it to state," Deiter said.
Head coach Kelly Lampe believes that Deiter has experienced an amazing recovery from last year’s struggles.
"Jacob had a rough season last year with much illness and injury. He is looking very strong this year and if he can stay healthy, he has the possibility to have a fun time," Lampe stated.
There are eight other people joining Deiter this year in cross country. They are seniors Rachelle DeShazo and Aaron Blush; juniors Steph Bryant, Rachel McCall, and Matt Runyan; sophomore Nick deSouza; and freshman Lainey Roberson.
Blush stated that he would like to learn from Deiter.
"I would like to learn more subtle arts of cutting corners. Of course, it helps to be short, so...I admire Jacob's work ethic. He keeps at it even if he's hurting. I like the way Jacob always stays with it and keeps working at it," he said.
Deiter commented that his work ethic comes from watching his idol Michael Johnson run. Deiter prepares for the meets by incorporating weight training with long runs and sprint drills.
During his freshman year, Deiter received 10th at Mission Valley and Holton, 68th at Wamego, and 26th at Wabaunsee. During his sophomore year, Deiter finished 21st at Mission Valley, fifth at Wabaunsee, and 29th at McClouth. This year, he placed third at Mission Valley.
Catch Deiter and the rest of the cross country runners today at McClouth. The meet begins at 4 p.m.
