Every Friday night as the fans cheer on the Silver Lake High School football team, there is one player who can be heard above the rest. Head football coach CJ Hamilton stated that Michael Christopher, senior, is one of the most influential players on the team.
"He is the most vocal of the seniors, and he is in charge of the defensive calls," said Hamilton.
Christopher tore his MCL ligament in his knee before Homecoming in September, which led him down the painful road of physical therapy. Christopher has recovered from his injury, and he returned against the Rossville Bulldawgs on Oct. 8.
Although Christopher doesn’t believe he’s an influential player, he understands the characteristics of a leader.
“I think players are considered influential because of leadership, effort and attitude,” said Christopher.
Hamilton enjoys watching Christopher's aggressiveness and awareness while he is playing.
“He adds a sense of unity and togetherness for our defense,” said Hamilton.
Christopher said the team bonds together to get each other pumped up.
“Some players do by making big plays, and others do by attitude,” said Christopher.
Christopher appreciates every position, but he said that the best spot to him is middle linebacker because he can see everything that’s surrounding him.
Christopher’s inspiration is found in Cody Oblander, senior, because they both had fun playing football together when they were younger. Oblander shares a mutual respect for his friend.
“He is always pumped and ready to make big plays. He brings excitement to the huddle and when we are in a tough situation, he gets us together and we pull through,” said Oblander.
Christopher likes tackling his opponents, but he isn’t so thrilled when it comes to two-a-days because they are tough and long. Christopher is looking forward to advancing to the playoffs.
“I’m really excited to be playing again because I think we are going to go far again this year,” said Christopher.
