Senior Dylan Bahm knows that this is his last year to make his mark at Silver Lake High School. The past three years have been leading toward a grand finale for him: graduation.

In order to make a final splash, he is currently preparing for his biggest performance yet, a lead role in the approaching musical “The Wizard of Oz.”

Bahm is no stranger to the stage. He was associated with the play during his eighth grade year, portraying Captain Butterworth in “Lagooned.”

He was a contributing success to “Guys and Dolls” as a tour guide and traveling drunk, “Bye Bye Birdie” as a bartender and presently “The Wizard of Oz,” which will be performed Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 5 at 2 p.m.

Bahm said that he tried out for the musical for several reasons.

“I tried out to be in the musical because I like to sing. I also like to be on stage and make people laugh,” Bahm replied.

Bahm’s motivation to participate in the musical came from one of last year’s actors.

“I would have to say that Matt Musselman was my inspiration to be in the musical because he always got up on stage and made everyone laugh and had a good time with it,” Bahm stated.

In the past, Bahm has only played characters who were intoxicated. This year, he was selected to play a starring role as the Cowardly Lion. Bahm stated that playing the Cowardly Lion is his toughest role so far.

“This year with the Lion has been, by far, the most challenging because I have the most lines and there’s just a lot more blocking to remember,” Bahm replied.

Bahm said that he relates to the Lion more than any other character he has portrayed.

“ The Lion in the ‘Wizard of Oz’ is kind of a big softie, and that’s what I am. I’m not a very mean guy, and I even get a little scared sometimes,” he stated.

Musical theater instructor Tonya McGough commented that Bahm takes charge and is a gifted performer.

“Dylan has been a great leader in the musical this year. He has worked hard on memorization, and his portrayal of the Cowardly Lion is a hoot! People will really miss out if they don’t get to see this talented senior show his stuff in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ “ McGough stated.

Bahm remarked that he has no future plans that include musical theater; however, knowing that it is his senior year has affected Bahm’s current performance.

“It makes me want to go out with a bang. I want this year to be the best that it’s been because I’m a bigger part of it, and I want everyone to enjoy being there,” he declared.
