Senior Chris Farris is anxious for his final role in this year’s spring play “Sherlock Holmes' Great Grandson Goes to Hollywood.”
Farris loves being involved in the play because he said that there are no more cliques, like in school, and people get along.
“It seems like everyone in the school has these certain groups, and they don’t really talk to other people. It seems like in the play, when people get together, it’s just like everyone’s working together. Even if you don’t get along with someone, you still have to get along with them,” Farris stated.
This year, he has a lead role as Sherwood Holmes, Sherlock Holmes’ great grandson. Farris is inspired to act because he likes to entertain.
“My motivation is that I believe that in public speaking … (it’s) like saying something or acting something out and being able to control somebody’s emotions by saying something or doing something funny,” Farris commented.
Farris has a very strong feeling of control when he is on stage; he loves the feeling of having the audience at his fingertips.
“You feel like you have some sort of control, some sort of ability. I am proud of being on stage; I am proud of acting, and I like to show it off to a lot of people,” said Farris.
During Farris’ career at Silver Lake, he has performed in numerous plays such as “The Babysitter’s Worst Nightmare,” where he played a child, and “Lagooned,” where he was involved in an even bigger play in eighth grade.
During his freshman year, he had an even smaller role, playing a lost character who had only three lines. When Farris was a sophomore, he was in “Knights of the Rad Table,” and his junior year he was in “The Nit Wits.”
This year's play will be performed on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. The tickets are $3.50 for children and $4.50 for adults.
Mary Larson, SLHS play director, describes Farris as a talented and funny actor.
“Chris is a talented actor who is constantly working to improve his performance. He has a very keen sense of comedic timing. He enjoys performing and that is very evident to the audience,” Larson stated.
Another talented senior actor is Mary Beth Rader, who described Farris as an animated actor.
“Chris is a great actor because he is willing to go over the top. He puts everything out there and gives the director so much to work with. He always brings 110 percent of himself to the stage,” stated Rader.
Larson said working with Farris is always a joy to her.
“Chris is very directable. He pays attention to detail and is a leader. I appreciate his creativity and the imagination element that he brings to every performance. He makes us laugh!
“He is always willing to try new approaches to the characters. Sometimes he surprises himself! It has been a joy to work with Chris- to watch him grow as a performer,” Larson commented.
