For some students, spelling is not a problem. Fifty-four of these grade school and junior high school students recently competed in this year’s annual spelling bee on Feb. 1.

In order to qualify for the spelling bee, most students in grades third through eighth competed in a smaller class spelling bee. The top three students in each class advance to compete in the all-school spelling bee.

The winner of this year’s competition was Derek Bledsoe, eighth-grader. Second place went to Justin Morgan, seventh-grader, and placing third as an alternate candidate for the county spelling bee was fifth-grader Sadie McGough.

Bledsoe and Morgan advance to the county-wide spelling bee held on Feb. 26 at Washburn Rural High School.

“It felt pretty good to win,” Bledsoe said.

Morgan also felt pretty good about his accomplishment, despite the fact that he said he didn’t study for the competition.

According to Ronda Dewey, grade school principal, the words for the spelling bee are selected from lists that were used in prior spelling bees and by using a supplement that is attached in the “Topeka Capital Journal.”

The judges for this year’s competition were Joyce Eckelberry, gifted teacher, and the announcer was former grade school principal Bill Ross.
