Eight journalists qualify to state

Fourteen Silver Lake High School students showed their dedication to journalism by competing at regionals on Feb. 18 at the University of Kansas. Eight of the students placed in eight regional contests and will return to KU for state journalism on May 7.
The Kansas Scholastic Press Association had more than 570 students from 30 high schools competing in Lawrence. Not only did eight students from Silver Lake place, but also three of the seniors double qualified.
Abby Cunningham placed first in cut line writing and received honorable mention in newspaper photography. Mary Beth Rader received second in advertising and honorable mention in newspaper photography. The third double qualifier was Rachelle DeShazo, who earned honorable mentions in yearbook photography and in yearbook copy writing. DeShazo said she loves competing in journalism.
“Competing gives me new ideas about what I want to do later in life. Going to regionals every year makes me more interested in journalism,” DeShazo said.
The other five qualifiers consisted of Lauren Cunningham, junior, for her first place yearbook photo. First place in the editing competition went to sophomore Calla Mounkes, while senior Marissa Shelley received honorable mention for editorial writing. Finally, for infographics, Rachel Stover, junior, placed second and Hunter Bowers, sophomore, earned honorable mention.
Journalism teacher Jamie Manhart was proud of all their work and was thrilled with how well the newer students competed.
“Abby, MB, Rachelle, and Lauren are four ‘veteran’ journalists who excel in the classroom; therefore, it was great to see them extend their success to this competition.
“Some of our newer staffers like Calla, Marissa, Rachel, and Hunter really stepped up to the plate and proved that we have a lot of fresh talent on the rise as well,” Manhart said.
