Many people cheer on the varsity basketball teams, but now they will be rewarded for their enthusiasm.
The Silver Lake High School basketball cheerleaders are sponsoring the Most Valuable Fan (MVF) award contest.
The contest began Feb. 11 and ends tonight at the sub-state basketball game vs. Pleasant Ridge. Sixteen lucky spirited fans have been nominated. Duke Kisner, SLHS commentator, will announce the winners during the halftime of the varsity girls’ game.
Four fans were chosen at each varsity game. The fans the cheerleaders chose were Brooke Stebbins, Jess Yates, Susie Yates, Connie Anderson, Ronnie Anderson, Greg Martinek, Jon Workman, Mary Christopher, Kisner, Kali Arney, Abby Cunningham, Jordan Lockwood, Jason Kellner, Loren Ziegler, Adam Simone, and Ashley Urban.
Three people will win the ultimate MVF award judged by Tracey DeShazo, head cheerleading coach, Liz Moore, captain of the basketball squad, and Jayme Lindstrom, co-captain of the basketball squad. The winners will receive a free pizza from Silver Lake’s Gambino’s and an award.
DeShazo said the judges are looking for spirit in their fans.
“The fan should be excited, positive, involved, clapping, cheering with the cheerleaders, and interested in the game,” she said.
During football season, Kisner won the MVF award. DeShazo stated that anyone is able to win this award. She explained that the purpose is to get the community included.
“We are trying to get the students and parents involved with the games,” she said.
