Baseball season is just around the corner, and this year, they are expecting to really shine. The board of education voted in favor of installing new baseball lights because of safety concerns.

The board chose Midwest Lighting located in Maple Hill out of three bidders to install the new lights. It is costing the district $64,000 for this installation. According to Larry Winter, principal of Silver Lake Jr./Sr. High, the money is coming from the capital outlay fund.

Winter also stated that the lights will generate more light with fewer poles. Six poles will replace the former eight. He said this will be more energy efficient.

Installing lights at the softball field was also discussed. The board held a meeting almost a year ago and concluded that since about only one softball game continues after dark each season, it was not necessary.

Due to the ground being so moist, the project has slowed down. Winter stressed that the lights will be up and running before the first home baseball game on March 29.
