Abracadabra! Jerry Bollig, Silver Lake High School science teacher, recently held a magic show for the fifth graders in his room.
This is Bollig’s seventh annual magic show this year.
He wanted to create interest for the kids and help them find science more exciting.
“I talked to a few science teachers just to build up interest in science because at that age group, kids are real impressionable. It provides an interest in science. After fifth grade, you kind of lose kids with science. It’s too much work and they like other subjects better,” said Bollig.
Bollig explained how science could be more interesting than some people imagine.
“I did the magic show for the fifth graders to show them just the science besides being a boring subject. Instead of learning facts, they can learn application,” said Bollig.
Bollig demonstrated to the students a lot of surprising experiments.
“I showed them a lot of shock and all I guess. A lot of fire explosions. We made low heat; we used methane bubbles and high heat with the gummy bear experiment where it’s intense heat and it gets all flat,” said Bollig.
Bollig explained how the kids reacted to his magic.
“They really liked it. I enjoy doing it for them. I listened to the ‘ooos’ and ‘awes’. Some of it’s unexpected. They don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Bollig.
Bollig said that the show lasted a little bit over an hour.
“They get their money’s worth,” said Bollig.
Bollig explained that he would enjoy hosting the show again because it creates learning.
“I would do it again because I enjoy it. Like I said, it has real advantages besides education in this district. Once is enough. It’s a lot of time to set up, and I do it during my planning period,” said Bollig.
Bollig’s inspiration came from a college professor who built students’ interest in science.
“I talked to a lot of teachers about building up science interest. I had a college professor that last day of school would put on a chemistry magic show, and everybody just didn’t want to miss that one class. It was really intriguing all of the experiments and demonstrations they had,” said Bollig.
