Silver Lake art students traveled to Riley County on Monday, March 14 for Mid-East League Art, coming home with six different placers in four different divisions.
Two students who placed second in their respective divisions were junior Jennifer Fredrickson in pastels and sophomore Blaine Grooms in art synetics.
Junior Lauren Cunningham placed first in digital photography with the same photo that earned her first at regional journalism last month. She decided after doing so well at journalism that the photo could do well in art also since she liked the overall look of the photo.
“I think it did well because the lighting isn’t what you normally see, and I liked the layering,” commented Cunningham.
The final area that Silver Lake excelled in was the graphic art category which had Silver Lake students taking first, second and third. Those artists were senior Barbara Abrams, first, junior Rachel Stover, second, and junior Chelsea Davis, third.
Art teacher Kristin Herndon credited her training last summer by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for exposing her to more real-world designs, which helped students in this category. She said she also teaches how to understand theme and how to completely cover it in class, which helps to place in contests such as league.
