The last year of high school is about unforgettable moments: scoring the game-winning touchdown, serving an ace in the championship volleyball match, or for senior trackster Jason Kellner, placing at state for the first time.
Kellner has been involved in track since the summer of his fourth-grade year when he joined the Silver Lake Striders, a summer league track team. Kellner said he decided to become involved with track for competitive reasons.
“I’m a very competitive person, and track is the perfect way for me to compete against other people. It also let’s me compete in a good environment where I can hopefully win some races, and I guess if I lose some, too, it’s just how it goes,” he stated.
Kellner is one of seven seniors on this year’s track team. Other seniors include Amie Worthington, Lindsey Davis, Jenny Lovelady, Michael Christopher, Cody Oblander, and Joey Lightell. Teammate Davis looks up to Kellner.
“Jason is a great teammate. He always keeps a positive attitude and displays excellent leadership skills. His work ethic influences me to do the best I can just as he does,” Davis replied.
Although Kellner’s main goal is to place at state this year, he would also like to improve his times from last season. To help him accomplish his goals, Kellner put more effort into practicing before track started.
“This winter I spent a lot of time in the weight room working out, trying to get stronger, faster, and I took some speed classes to work on my starting speed and my acceleration. Also, I have just been working really hard during practices,” Kellner said.
Track coach Kelly Lampe feels that Kellner’s leadership skills contribute to the track team.
“Jason is a great leader and is working very hard to achieve his goals,” Lampe stated.
Senior year can compel athletes and students to do the best they can, for this is the final year to make a difference. Kellner said that knowing it is his senior year does affect his performance.
“Well, there is quite a bit of pressure for that. Everybody wants to have a good senior year and win lots of races and do well in all of their activities. I have been working as hard as I can, and hopefully it will all pay off, and I will have a good last year,” he commented.
So far, Kellner has gotten off to a good start. The first track meet was held April 1 at Silver Lake. Kellner finished first in the 200-meter dash, and his 4x100 relay team placed fifth.
The second meet was held at Wabaunsee on April 8. Kellner took fifth place in shot put, first in the 200-meter dash, second in the 100-meter dash, and second in the boys 4x100 meter relay. For future meet results, check out the “Eagle Times Newspaper” link.
“Track is extremely rewarding for me. I have accomplished lots of things, and I have met many people. It’s a good place to meet to compete and have fun,” Kellner said.
