Farris earns promotion

By Justin Maryott

September 01, 2005

Five years ago, Dan Farris accepted a job at Silver Lake High School as a full-time maintenance worker. This year, Farris was promoted to head maintenance-custodian after the former head maintenance-custodian, Kay Brooks, retired in May 2005. She had served in this position since Aug. 20,1979. Farris said he was a front-runner for the job because of his experience working with custodian Brett Hamilton.

Farris said the advantages of his new position are that he is out of the weather and is in charge of the accountability of the building. He shared a few goals he has for this school year.

"My biggest goals are just to keep the school up to Dr. Pegram's and Larry Winter's standards. The other would probably be just keeping everyone happy," he said.

Silver Lake Superintendent Dr. Steve Pegram thought Farris was the perfect man for the new opening.

Pegram said, "Dan was a good candidate for the job because of his vast experience in the field and the innate ability to get everyone to work as a team and work hard."

Farris has also worked for Silver Lake as a full-time bus driver for six years to earn extra income.

His new responsibilities include managing the custodial staff and being responsible for all clean ups. Farris is in charge of custodians Bobby Bowers, Chris Burdles and Adam Hawkins.

Farris said, "The people I'm in charge of make my job a lot easier and they do an enormous job."

Bowers couldn't be happier with his new boss.

Bowers said, "Dan's an easy guy to get along with. As long as you get your work done, there are no problems."

Farris did say the difficulty of his new job made it a little more stressful.

Farris said, "It can be a little more stressful than the old one because everything has to be done in a certain amount of time."

Farris' new work schedule is from 4 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., while his old schedule was 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Pegram has been very pleased with the job Farris has done so far.

He said, "Dan has done a wonderful job since he's been hired. The high school's looked the best I've seen since I've been here. I'm sure you've noticed that, too."
