Feeling like helping those less fortunate? Then, bring your wallets and purses, ladies and gentlemen. Diana Frownfelter, child development teacher, and her child development students are spearheading a fundraiser to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
On Thursday, Sept. 8, child development students will be visiting junior high and high school classrooms during study time to collect money from anyone who would like to donate. There will also be a donation jar in the high school office until Friday, Sept. 9.
Frownfelter said all financial assistance will be given to the Salvation Army. The class would like to reach their goal of raising $500.
The fundraiser began on Friday, Sept. 2, when Carrie Myran, Kassi Simone, and Jessica Workman, members of the child development class, collected money at the football game against Centralia.
Frownfelter came up with the idea, and the students thought it was worth pursuing. She said she was willing to work with the kids.
"They were all very enthusiastic about the idea. Child development is a vocationally funded class, and part of the curriculum is to include leadership. They all volunteered and stepped up and took the leadership roles," stated Frownfelter.
Students of the child development class mentioned that they were proud of what they were doing for the victims.
"It makes you feel good when you do things for other people. It makes you happy to know you're helping others," said Workman.
To help get this campaign going, senior Katlyn Mathis decided to make stickers for kids and teachers who donate money at school.
"The whole class decided to make stickers. I decided to be in charge of making the stickers because I am familiar with making labels," explained Mathis.
If anyone is interested in helping victims of Hurricane Katrina, see Frownfelter in Room 108 before Friday.
