Winter receives prestigious honor

Being a principal of a school that has earned many titles and awards, both academic and athletic, would be considered quite an honor in itself to most. However, Larry Winter, principal of Silver Lake High School, had the tables turned when he was personally honored as the Area I High School Principal Honoree by The Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals (KASSP).

Winter was selected to receive this award by secondary school principals in his district. All candidates are evaluated on their school leadership, school improvements, dedication, professionalism, and service to students. There are six districts in the state of Kansas, and one person is selected to represent each district.

Winter was unaware that he was even being considered for such an award.

"I cannot think of one thing I did as a principal, but I can think of many things that the school has done. Receiving this award just verifies that this school is doing an excellent job," Winter explained.

Winter has been principal at SLHS for 25 years. He also taught social studies classes, physical education classes, and drivers education for five years prior to becoming an administrator. He has had the pleasure of teaching many students. Some of those students have even become employees.

Former student and current SLHS math teacher Brad Womack feels that Winter is finally getting the recognition he deserves.

"Having Mr. Winter as a principal and now as a superior, I still feel that he is fair to everyone, whether it be students or teachers," Womack commented.

Even students at SLHS acknowledge Winter as an exceptional leader and are proud to have him as a principal. Val Roberson, senior, has looked to Winter as a positive leader throughout her four years of high school.

"It is an honor to have a principal who has been recognized by his peers in such a prestigious manner," Roberson stated.

In addition to having his name recognized throughout the state, Winter received a plaque that states his title. Winter will also be in the running with the other five district honorees for Principal of the Year next year.

With only one person receiving the award this year in his district, Winter could not express how much he appreciated the acknowledgment.

"It was nice to be recognized by my peers. It is as much as my award as it is the school's," Winter stated.
