Eagles fall short at state

By Justin Maryott

December 01, 2005

The 2005-2006 Silver Lake Eagles ended their storybook season with a 28- 30 loss to Southeast of Saline in the state championship game. Both teams played tough and battled in one of the best clashes in the state.

Coach C.J. Hamilton said, "We played hard, both in the state game and throughout the season. We played with a lot of confidence."

Coach Loren Ziegler added, "We probably overachieved throughout the year, overcoming injuries in which people stepped up and were able to win games that people thought we shouldn't have won."

This year's senior class left their mark in Kansas football history by making it to the state championship game every year they were in high school.

Senior Andrew Christopher said, "I feel honored because only two teams can make it to state, and we did it every year."

"Every senior class has their own special memories. You get to see them start their freshman year and evolve throughout their high school careers," added Coach Hamilton.

The Eagles showed a lot of heart during the game, coming up with one big play after another to answer Saline's impressive plays.

Senior Kyle Steele said, "There was a lot more inspiration to win since it was the seniors last game."

In the second half, the Eagles had the Trojans pinned down on a key third down where the Trojans always seemed to come up with big plays. The Trojans converted and scored, which proved to be the winning touchdown. The Eagles just needed a field goal to take the lead but couldn't get into field goal range.

Coach Hamilton said, "Anytime the season ends with a loss in the state game, it's disappointing, but at the same time, we made a big accomplishment."
