On Sept. 23, Army National Guard Warrant Officer Stephen Peak was awarded the Bronze Star for exceptional meritorious service in Iraq from November 2003 to January 2005.
Peak said he did not expect such a prestigious honor.
"I was very humbled and surprised because not very many people are given this award. I would say less than one percent. I was just doing my job; I wasn't looking for recognition," said Peak.
Peak has accumulated more than 34 years of military service. Peak is a supply systems technician with the 74th Quartermaster Company. He is also a full-time employee of the adjunct general's department as a mobilization planner.
Peak explained the responsibilities of a mobilization planner.
"I help units with training, administrative assistance, and help fill shortages within the military," he said.
While in Iraq, Peak was assigned to the 30th Brigade Combat Team of North Carolina National Guard and attached to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the Division Support Command. Peak is a Liaison Officer for the 30th Brigade.
Peak clarified the function of the Division Support Command.
"The Division Support Command provides the supply needs for the entire Army; everything one would need to get through a day, a week, or even a year," he said.
Peak described the atmosphere and people in Iraq.
"Seeing villages having pure water for the first time, new schools being built and children smiling. People in Iraq have gained a new outlook for the future," said Peak.
Peak offered advice to anyone interested in joining the military.
"All branches of the military offer valuable training that can be used in civilian occupation. The military offers one the chance to serve for our heritage and future," he commented.
Peak explained his future military plans.
"I will continue to serve to the best of my ability in whatever capacity I'm called for. I hope to retire next year. That's when I'll be 60 years old," he said.
