Sixth graders perform Greek play

Rachel Brokaw

December 19, 2005

The three classes in sixth-grade social studies performed a play for third and fourth-grade students and Mrs. Musselman's class. The play was called "How The City of Athens Got Its Name." The following people from my class had solo speaking parts in it: Narrator, Rachel Brokaw; Storyteller Clio, Sadie McGough and Rebecca Holder; Poseidon, Chase Ray; Athena, Josie Augustine; and the smallest member of the Alpha chorus, Whitney White. The rest of the students were members of two groups called the Alpha and Omega choruses.

The play was about two Greek groups each wanting a different god to be the patron of their new city. Omega wanted Poseidon because they thought that seafood and being able to travel in the sea was most important of all. Alpha, however, wanted Athena because they thought that wisdom was the most important virtue. So it was suggested that they hold a contest in which they each presented a gift to the people of the city. They held it, and both Athena and Poseidon went off to prepare their gifts.

While the two choruses were trying to think of what it might be, Poseidon arrived. He had prepared a beautiful spring of water. While they all admired it, Whitney White pointed out that it was a spring of salt water. After everyone agreed, Athena entered. Everyone watched as she mysteriously formed an olive tree. Then everyone knew that they would name their city Athens after Athena. According to mythology, this is how Athens was named.

The sixth grade thanks Gwen Battis for drawing the Parthenon that was used as a backdrop for the play. I also wish that you enjoyed my article about how Athens might have gotten its name.
