Senior leadership evolves on basketball team

For many seniors in high school, sports set a foundation for their teen years.  For Silver Lake seniors who participate in basketball, the last season should be the best. Senior Austin Urban has played on the Silver Lake High School basketball team since his freshman year.

Urban has really become a critical player this past year.  Since there are more practices than games, Urban has come to enjoy practices more than the games.

"I usually like practicing because you get to play the underclassmen, show them who is boss. It's a chance to show your experience," quoted Urban.

It seems being older has its advantages such as teaching the underclassmen and having more playing time.

Urban, unlike some of the other players, only started participating in basketball in junior high.  He felt that is when his interest really took off.

"This was probably in junior high when I moved out to Silver Lake and I got to play a lot more and being able to work hard at something makes you feel good. I just had fun playing it," stated Urban.

During football season, Urban broke his hand but didn't know it until a few months later when he had to go back to the hospital for a second time for X-rays. The doctors told him that it was in fact broken and that he would have to have a cast on for a total of three weeks. This put a crunch on his playing time.

"It made me feel bad but it was kind of a relief to know that I could fix the reason that it was hurting and that it was actually broken," said Urban.

As Urban has progressed through high school, he has had to overcome more responsibilities.  With graduation on its way, Urban and his family are thinking about what college he will attend. These are just some of the questions that are on his and his parent's mind. Hoping to get a scholarship for playing basketball, Urban talked about where he would like to go.

"I really have no college in mind, just to go to some kind of smaller school so that I can get some playing time," Urban said.

With the help of Urban on the Silver Lake basketball team, hopefully the players can excel to the next level.
