Qualifying eight students to state journalism says a lot about the journalism program at Silver Lake High School. Those eight qualifying students and their categories include: Calla Mounkes, editing, honorable mention; Rachel Stover, editorial writing, honorable mention; Caitlin Grant, feature writing, honorable mention, headline writing, third place, and theme/graphics, honorable mention; Loren Hewitt, headline writing, honorable mention; Lauren Cunningham, sports photography, honorable mention; Jenni Holmer, sports photography, honorable mention, yearbook sports writing, honorable mention; Val Roberson, yearbook copy writing, third place; and Danielle Bulson, yearbook copy writing, honorable mention.

Jamie Manhart, journalism instructor, fresh off maternity leave, was very pleased to see so many of her students qualify for state without her being in the classroom to guide them along the way the last two months.

"The fact that eight students qualified for state journalism is a true testament to their hard work, talent and dedication to the journalism program at Silver Lake," said Manhart.

Mounkes, who has been a part of the journalism department for two and half years, was not too thrilled to receive only honorable mention because she had taken first place last year in editing. However, she still was pleased.

"I kind of expected it because I got first place last year, but I was still really excited," said Mounkes.

Bulson, who competed for the first time, was thrilled.

"I was very excited; I hope that I will place at state," said Bulson.

There is even some competition among the eight students.

"I would like to beat out Holmer (in sports photography) at state because I feel like I have more experience, but I know that she is talented," stated Cunningham.

Grant qualified in all three events that she entered. Manhart believes that this feat has never been accomplished at SLHS.

"Caitlin Grant has a good chance of placing at state because she qualified in all three events in which she competed at regional. Her accomplishment is the first that I know of at Silver Lake," said Manhart.

Manhart said she is very proud of her eight qualifiers. She believes that Cunningham in particular will compete well at state.

"In terms of taking first, I believe Lauren Cunningham has the best chance in photography because she has such a natural talent and a real eye for what makes an award-winning photo," she said.
