Silver Lake wrestlers named to all-league team

Even though the season is over, the wrestlers are still receiving words of praise. Of the 10 wrestlers who made it to state, six were named to the All Mid-East League Wrestling Team.

Sophomores Collin Hase and Jason Mellies; juniors Keaton Taylor and Jason Corwin; and seniors Jacob Deiter and Drew Hawkins made the all-league team. The following received honorable mention: freshmen Tyler White, Alex Hawkins and Kyle Wichman; and juniors Spencer Hinson, Cody Meier, and Jared Wall.

As a team, the wrestlers placed fifth at state, with Hase taking home the gold, Jason Corwin clinching third and Taylor capturing fourth.

Deiter commented that even though the wrestling team had a very successful season, at times they did not wrestle to their full potential.

"I felt that we had a strong team this year, but at times we didn't come together with the chemistry we needed to set ourselves apart from the other top teams," he explained.

Taylor said qualifying for state was not his biggest accomplishment this year.

"My biggest accomplishment this year was when I made it to semis at state because it's one thing to make it to state, but you have to kick it up that extra notch to make it to semifinals," he said.

Corwin stated that his goal for the season was to take home the gold at state.

"My goal for the season was to win state, but I didn't accomplish this because I lost by one point in the semifinals," he explained.

There are many different moves in wrestling, but Mellies said his favorite is the headlock.

"My favorite wrestling move would have to be the headlock. I feel that I'm good at it because almost all of my matches that I won was because of the headlock," he said.

Hase commented that his biggest improvement this year was getting revenge for finals at state last year and staying consistent to accomplish his goals.

"My biggest accomplishment was breaking the state record for most team points in a season, winning state, and revenging my loss from last year. I just stayed to the same old routine, watching 'Vision Quest' and listening to Disturbed," he explained.

For D. Hawkins, his biggest achievement was not at any tournament, but in one of their everyday practices.

"Once during practice, I actually took Jason Corwin down. It was the biggest accomplishment I have ever had in wrestling," he exclaimed.

Mellies explained that his biggest triumph was the simple act of improving on his skills.

"I think my biggest accomplishment in wrestling this year would be that my techniques got better. I think that because I wouldn't have gotten as far as I did if my technique was terrible," he commented.
