Rick Blush, Silver Lake Jr./Sr. High School metals and ag teacher, takes students every year to compete in Future Farmers of America competitions around the area.
Blush took only two students to Holton on March 1 to compete in the N.E. District Selection Day. Nick Clark, senior, took first place in turf landscape management, and Bradley Bahret, sophomore, took second place in beef placement. Blush was happy with the outcome.
"Both students did well. I was very pleased with the results," said Blush.
Usually seniors win this competition. This year was different. Bahret was able to place at a young age, which gives him an even better chance to place in years to come.
"I felt shocked and happy because not many sophomores do that good. It is fun to compete against other people that have programs," said Bahret.
Blush only entered two students because in order to be eligible, the student must have a record program. A record program requires students to have experience in that particular area. For example, Clark maintained a cemetery, therefore making him eligible for the turf landscape management category.
"The students must complete at least one year of records for their program to be eligible for the award. Most students who apply will be juniors or seniors and hopefully we will have more award applicants in the year to come," said Blush.
