According to golf coach Jerry Bollig, he is excited to see so many golfers this season who are more than willing to practice and improve themselves.
The golf team includes freshmen Willie Smith and Josh Rosebaugh; sophomores Dylan Gragert, Andy Knudsen, Calvin Smith, Brian Lampe, and Eddie Avila; juniors Nick deSouza, Seth Kelley, and Matt Burke, and seniors Eric Cray, Jordan Lowe, and Nick Hill.
Bollig said Avila has improved the most. He said he has really picked up on the game compared to last year.
"Eddie Avila has improved the most from the beginning of last year as a novice into a thinking golfer for this year. He is more selective of his shots and plans where each shot's intended to land, rather than just making contact with the ball and hoping it goes close to where you aim," said Bollig.
Bollig takes the team to golf courses all over the area such as Prairie View, Western Hills, Cypress Ridge, Lake Shawnee, Sports Center, and even Forbes Field. The variety allows the golfers to experience challenging courses so that they don't get used to the same terrain.
"The favorite course that we like playing is Prairie View because it is not too busy, and there is always no wait to tee off," stated Bollig.
Gragert, who has never hit a hole in one in his life, can now say differently. He and his teammates were recently at the Sports Center, and Gragert hit his ball with his eight irons and got a hole in one.
This achievement is rare, even for professional golfers. There are some many factors that play a role in how the ball flies and how hard to hit it. So for Gragert to sink one is quite remarkable.
"I was extremely excited. I didn't know what to think at first, but it was awesome," said Gragert.
The weather was not a significant factor.
"The wind pushed my ball to the right a little, but otherwise, not much," stated Gragert.
Teammate Lowe started playing when he was a sophomore and has stepped up as a senior and become a leader.
"It feels good. You get a chance to be a leader and teach the younger people," stated Lowe.
Lowe's season will start to shape up this year with the goals he is setting, starting with a fourth- place finish at the Jeff West Invitational on April 4.
"My goals are to play good in every tournament. Last year I didn't do so well in the serve," said Lowe.
With this being his last year, Lowe realized that he would never get to play on a school team again.
"I will miss playing for a team next year and miss playing on courses for free," said Lowe.
