Year end events signify closure

Toward the end of the year, students become restless due to two major events: prom and graduation.

Prom begins at 8 p.m. on May 13 and is being held at the Great Overland Station in Topeka. Kristin Herndon, art teacher, is on the prom committee.  She stated that decorating is going really well.

"So far things have gone extremely smooth during the planning process.  The only problem we have encountered thus far is our prom invitations were back ordered until July 7.  We ended up making them instead, and I think they turned out great," said Herndon.

Herndon said students have from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. to arrive at prom before the doors close.  Also, students must sign a sheet that gives the chaperones the authority to call parents if students who signed up do not show up.

When midnight rolls around, it will be time to go. However, the fun is not over. An after-prom party will be held at the high school. It starts at midnight and the doors are open until 1 a.m. Once the doors shut, students cannot enter or leave after-prom.

After-prom will consist of card games, different inflatable games, and a prize giveaway at the end of the night. The prizes will range from gift certificates to microwaves

Junior Loren Hewitt, one of the many students who helped pick the theme for prom, said they discussed many choices before picking "Rendezvous in Paris."

"To choose this, a few of the junior girls looked through all of the prom books.  We then narrowed it down to two different themes.  Later we had a meeting and we voted," stated Hewitt.

After-prom will end at 5 a.m.

The long-awaited event for every senior is graduation.

Graduation is on May 21 and will start at 3 p.m. There will be five speakers. The order is as follows: processional "Pomp and Circumstance" by the high school band; welcome speech by Alex Oyler; senior recognition by Larry Winter, principal; speakers Valerie Roberson and Josh Ruby, co-valedictorians; senior video by video production class; vocal selection by senior select and concert vocal; presentation of diplomas by the members of the Board of Education; closing by Kate Taylor; and recessional "Pomp and Circumstance" by the high school band.

After the ceremony, the class will line up outside to receive congratulations.  The graduation ceremony should last about an hour and a half.
