Roberts pitches perfect game

Perfect. This a word that most people do not associate with themselves. No one is ever really perfect in any activity in which they participate. However, for freshman pitcher Tyler Roberts and the rest of the varsity baseball team, they join the elite who can boast a perfect game.

On May 1, Roberts accomplished an incredible feat. According to Alan Cunningham, head baseball coach, a perfect game is when no hitters reach base, no hits, no walks, and no errors by the defense.

Cunningham said that Roberts is the first pitcher he has coached who has thrown a perfect game.  The fact that Roberts is a freshman, just adds to the excitement.

"A perfect game is a rarity, irrespective of the age of the pitcher. CJ and I think it was the first one we've witnessed as coaches at Silver Lake," Cunningham stated.

The team members on the field consisted of seniors Tyler Boxberger and Ty Herrmann; juniors Jason Corwin, Andrew Brunner and Chad Ray; sophomores Justin Backman and Josh Baden; and freshman Cameron Renfro.

Brunner had never experienced a perfect game. He felt that Roberts deserved most of the credit.

"It was a great accomplishment for Tyler. Not many pitchers can accomplish this. The defense, we just backed him up," said Brunner.

Roberts felt proud to have pitched a perfect game.

"It felt good since that was the first time I had ever done that, but I want to thank my teammates for helping me make it happen," Roberts stated.

Cunningham explained that having a freshman star sets a good foundation for the baseball team. He also explained what goals Roberts should have for here on out.

"Tyler has a good competitive mental approach to baseball. He never gets too excited or too depressed regarding his performance. Tyler has the tools to be as good as he wants to be, both as a hitter and a pitcher," Cunningham explained.

Roberts has been playing baseball since he was four years old. He has been pitching for at least nine years. Other than pitching, Roberts also plays first base.

"I really enjoy playing both because you have a big part at both positions because you have to make sure you throw strikes, and at first, you have to be able to catch the ball. Overall, I really enjoy everything about baseball," said Roberts.

With the baseball team being younger, this year was a growing year. The season ended on an 11-8 record. As a freshman, Roberts feels that he has a lot more to accomplish before his high school career is over.

"It feels good to have a big part in the game as a pitcher since the pitcher is in control on the field. My attribute is just to work hard at practices," Roberts stated.

Cunningham believes that there is promise for future SL baseball teams.

"We're always hopeful that incoming freshmen will already have a good baseball foundation like Tyler and Cameron Renfro and the rest of our freshmen have," said Cunningham.

The baseball team finished up the season on May 15 with a semifinal loss to Rossville.

"The loss was kind of disappointing, but there is always next year," Brunner stated.
