Most people's fondest memories of grade school are playing on the playground. Some remember the monkey bars the most, while others recall gliding down the slide over and over. For Silver Lake elementary students, new memories will be made this year with brand new playground donated by the Parent and Teacher Organization.

The PTO sponsored numerous fund raisers over the past year, including a mini carnival, T-shirt sales, selling value cards and recycling toner cartridges. The new equipment cost $41,000. The PTO raised some of the money and the rest was donated by the school district. The fundraising took place all last school year.

According to Ronda Dewey, elementary principal, the old equipment has been in place for over 15 years. She believes the new equipment is an excellent addition.

"The new equipment is great! Our playground additions have really improved the area," Dewey stated.

Dewey also commented about her favorite part of the project, which was seeing residents gather to help.

"My favorite part was seeing people in the community volunteer to get it together for our kids and seeing all of the kids enjoying it," said Dewey.

Tonia Schuckman, PTO president, explained why the organization decided to buy new equipment.

"Well, first off, the old equipment was unsafe. Secondly, we wanted something that would benefit all of the kids. All in all, we just felt they needed new equipment,” Schuckman stated.

Dewey said the weekend after the equipment was installed, volunteers gathered to paint a mural of the United States on the blacktop near the playground.

As for enjoying the new equipment, Dewey is not the only one. Lane Hough, third-grade student, shared his excitement about the new equipment.

"I like the new playground a lot. There are more things to play on. My favorite part is the pipes. They're hollow and you can yell in them. I like the poles that wiggle and the pole you can pounce on," Hough explained.
