Homecoming is around the corner. The 2006 candidates are Jayme Lindstrom, Evan Malloy, Loren Hewitt, Keaton Taylor, Brooke Stebbins, and Marty Pfannenstiel. Each year, the student body votes for six students from the senior class, three girls and three boys.

The candidates are looking forward to the upcoming Homecoming festivities.

"I am very excited to be nominated as a Homecoming candidate because it will be fun to do the activities with close friends," stated Stebbins.

The candidates are eager to experience the thrill of Homecoming because it provides them with a special memory from high school.

"I am excited for Homecoming activities because they will be things you can look back on when you get older and remember from high school," explained Malloy.

This year's Homecoming activities will be based on the Silver Lake High School's annual "Spirit Week." Awards will be given for all of the activities.

New this year is "Hobo Homecoming." A male and female were randomly chosen from the freshman, sophomore, and junior class to serve as the class representatives. The candidates are juniors Calvin Smith and Heather Rakestraw; sophomores Dustin Gauntt and Britney Workman; and freshmen Lucas Mitchell and Karlee Brunner.

There are boxes specifically marked for each class located outside of the library for students to place money in. Here's the catch. Placing pennies in the boxes will take away from the running total. Students should be sure to leave the pennies out of their favorite candidates' box and remember to fill the boxes with pennies of the candidates they want to lose.

There are many activities taking place throughout the week, starting on Sunday at 5 p.m. with hall decorating for two hours. The colors this year will be as follows: seniors - black; juniors - silver; sophomores - maroon; and freshman - gold. Students should bring all of their own supplies because they will not be provided.

Get your grass skirts and those colorful leis out because Monday will be known as "Hawaiian Day."  There will also be a JV football game at home against Riley County that evening, but don't forget about those girl golfers. They will be competing at the regional golf tournament at Cyprus Ridge located in Topeka.

"Favorite Music Day" will be the theme on Tuesday. There will also be a volleyball game at Rossville, which is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

The fun doesn't stop there. Wednesday will be "Camouflage/ Hunter Orange/ Steve Irwin Day." Also, high school students can join in a competitive game of "Capture the Bear." The game will be held on the high school football field starting at 6:30 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m.

Got twins? We will! On Thursday, it will be "Multiplicity Day." There will also be a sign-making party in the high school parking lot from 5-6 p.m. Bring poster paper and paint just in case.

Last but not least is "Maroon and Gold Day" on Friday. During study time, the Homecoming video will be shown to the student body, and the students will then vote for Homecoming King and Queen.

There will be a parade starting at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, followed by a pep rally. The Homecoming ceremony will be held before the game at 6:30 p.m. on the high school football field. Following the game will be the Homecoming dance. It will be at the high school until midnight.
