FFA chapter places in dairy cattle judging

During Homecoming week, dressing in camouflage, playing "Capture the Bear" and sporting maroon and gold wear consumed most of the student body. However, the Silver Lake FFA chapter participated in an aberration of a Homecoming activity: judging dairy cattle.

There were over 17 schools present and nearly 200 contestants participating in the event in Marysville on Oct. 11. The members were divided into two different teams:  the "A" team for more experienced judgers and the "B" team for less experienced members.

The Silver Lake "A" team consisted of seniors Jayme Lindstrom, Caitlin Grant, Austin Abbott, Jason Corwin and Keaton Taylor and junior Collin Hase. The "B" team was senior Erin Workman; sophomores Adam Wetzel, Willie Smith and Quin Bruce; and freshmen Brian Hanson and Lukas Russell.

The "B" team placed fourth out of 16 teams. Hanson placed fifth high individual and Smith placed 11th in the "B" team. According to Rick Blush, FFA sponsor, none of the "B" team students had ranked dairy cows before. For the most part, these students had also never even seen a Holstein cow up close. However, this did not affect the team's results.

The "A" team placed third out of 17 teams. Taylor placed 11th high individual, Corwin finished 12th high individual and Hase claimed 13th high individual.

Blush was pleased with how well the team performed because most students were new to judging and new to the FFA chapter.

"The students handled themselves well at the event and that always makes me proud. These kids worked hard for about a month listening to judging advice and watching tapes of cows. These kids tried their best and that always makes me feel that the event was successful," Blush stated.

For Grant, this was her first time to ever compete at an FFA competition. She was pleased with how well she did.

"I had never judged dairy cattle, or anything for that matter, before that Wednesday. Also, I had to learn how to judge them on the bus ride there. I was very surprised Mr. Blush put me on the 'A' team, and I did better than I thought I would," Grant explained.
