The Silver Lake girls get a yearly chance to show off their football skills in a game of Powder Puff football. This year, Powder Puff football will be held on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. Instead of donating canned foods like last year, the players will pay $2, and the spectators will pay $1 for admission. The money will be donated to the local food pantries during the holidays. Business teacher Loren Ziegler and junior Brian Lampe will provide commentary this year at the event.
Last year, most of the students enjoyed participating in the games.
"I enjoyed being able to interact with all the students because it helped bring all of us together," senior Caitlin Grant stated.
The game schedule will start with the seniors battling the freshman at 2 p.m. The games will have a running clock for 20 minutes. After that game, the juniors and sophomores will duke it out. When the games are finished, there will be a consolation game immediately following the junior and sophomore game. Then there will be a championship game following the consolation game.
Awards will be given to not only the winning team who will receive a trophy but also the team with the best mascot and the best uniforms. There will be surprise judges and winners will receive undisclosed prizes.
All girls wanting to participate may sign up in the library. Also, all senior boys who would like to be a referee or a member of the chain gang need to also sign up in the library.
The Student Council decided to continue this activity because so many students participated.
"We felt like it was a success last year because it was a good way for students to get out and have fun. It also is for a great cause," stated StuCo sponsor Mary LaMar.
LaMar said StuCo decided to put the money toward the canned goods because they are competing against Rossville in the canned food drive and also because they wanted to donate the proceeds earlier so food pantries could have the food at Thanksgiving.
