Spring plays come to the stage

On Feb. 18, students will perform two plays called "If the Shoe Fits" and "The Mysterious Case of the Missing Ring." Mary Larson, English teacher and play director, commented that the plays are both "humorous, with physical humor." Larson also stated the setting is very unique.

"Both of the plays have a royal medieval royalty theme setting, like a castle, but they are also contemporary. It's a mixture of past meets the present, so it's kind of interesting," she said.

Tickets will be available at the door prior to the Sunday performance, which begins at 2 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

Jill Lira, senior actress, commented that she went out for the play because she really likes the play environment.

"I decided to go out for the play because I love being on stage, and I really enjoy the play atmosphere with Mrs. Larson," she said.

Larson explained that there isn't just one person who stands out in the plays.

"As for both plays, the character who stands out the most isn't just one person; it is a group of people who move on and off stages, who are powerful little entourages. The characterizations are very company-oriented. It is a company of actors, where they are all interlocked, rather than one person being the main lead," she said.

Laci Reamer, senior cast member, stated that it is an honor to earn a main role.

"It feels like such a great privilege because knowing that the directors have so much confidence in me to have that role and knowing that I am able to make it all happen, makes me feel that much better and more confident in my acting abilities," she said.

Larson commented that the plays have many similarities and differences.

"The plays are both one act, and comedies, and farce comedies. They are different because one is more outlandish than the other one. They are both crazy, but 'The Mysterious Case of the Missing Ring' is zanier," she said.

Eddie Avila, junior cast member, explained that Denzel Washington inspired him to be an actor.

"I think Denzel Washington inspired me a little. In his movie, 'The Hurricane,' he does a really great job in making me think about my life. He just has that effect. Looking at his problems then looking at mine, I had some of the same, not to his extent, but he really did a great job," he said.

Lira commented that her mother inspired her to act.

"I would have to say a number of people inspire me, but highest on the list is my mother because she always told me she didn't know how I got on stage and performed. I love seeing her when I perform; she looks so proud," she said.

Larson stated that it is difficult to decide which play to perform each year.

"To decide the play each year, I have a meeting to see how many people want to be involved in the play and try to cast everyone if I can. That has a lot to do with it. I like to do a comedy because it is more pleasing to the audience. Most of the dramatic plays have less cast members, and I don't like to cast only like 10 people. The classical plays require the same thing, so I don't get to do many classic plays because that would make the theater more competitive and I don't want it to be like that," she said.

Reamer commented that her dad inspired her to get involved with the plays.

"He always believes in me and I feel like I make him proud by doing something that he wishes he had done in high school," she said.

Larson explained that the biggest challenge of the play is to find time.

"The biggest challenge of the play will be time and having everyone at rehearsals, and it's harder to have a large cast and have a good show because of the amount of time they can spend rehearsing. That's the biggest challenge.

"To be in the play, you have to be willing to put your time into the play after you put your time into everything else. You have to be dedicated to make a good show. You also have to be able to memorize and be able to get along with other actors," she said.
