On Feb. 28, 17 Silver Lake High School students medaled at league art in Rossville. Kristin Herndon, art teacher, commented that anyone in art class could compete at league art.

"For the most part, I let the students decide what they will enter. I encourage everyone enrolled in art to enter. It is an important part of art to see the entire process from start to display," she said.

Senior Danielle Bulson explained how her group decided on which famous artwork to draw for the on-site chalk contest that earned them first place.

"Calla and I are both really enjoy Dali's works, so when we found out it had to be a famous painting, Dali popped into mind. We both really enjoy the shading and degree of difficulty involved," she said.

Bulson commented that the hardest part of the chalk contest was getting all of the details in the artwork, and the easiest part was simply participating in the contest.

"Making the face and hair look as good as it did in the painting (was the hardest part of the contest). Doing the contest was easy for the most part. Calla and Laci are so funny and made the contest a real treat," she said.

Senior Laci Reamer, who placed first in the chalk contest and second and third in digital photography, stated the most difficult part of photographing her animals was having them cooperate, and the easiest part was having unique animals.

"The hardest part was getting my animals to do what I wanted them to do. The easiest part about it was having such a cute dog and donkey. They are such unique animals that really catch your eye," she said.

Reamer stated that she was excited about getting first place in the chalk contest.

"Calla, Danielle, and I were all very thrilled because we worked so hard at it, and it was nice to see that someone saw our hard work," she said.

Herndon commented that she was very pleased with the students' success.

"Every year I am proud of my students' accomplishments. This year was extra special because of our senior leadership. I believe the success we have had this year is in direct correlation with the senior's creative spirit," she said.

The following students placed at league art: Ashley Hanson, first in landscape contest, honorable mention in graphic art, first in miscellaneous 2-D/3-D collage; Stephanie Magee, first in pencil and honorable mention in color pencil; Mark Tetuan, first in color pencil, first and honorable mention in graphic art; Stephanie Tosh, second in color pencil, first in computer art, second in miscellaneous 2-D/3-D collage; Shayla Dressman, third in miscellaneous 2-D/3-D collage; Taylor Ballengee, second in modified curriculum; and Stephanie Bolan, third in modified curriculum.
