Winter sports conclude

By Jill Lira

March 06, 2007

As March begins, the smell of freshly cut grass and the rhythm of the days seem to progress slower for those captive indoors. However, with the start of this new season, others must come to an end.

State wrestling seemed promising for Silver Lake as they sent nine individuals to compete. The results may not have been as victorious as hoped for, yet four individuals came away state placers. Senior Jason Corwin placed second after a double overtime loss in the final match, while fellow seniors Keaton Taylor and Cody Meier also placed. Taylor received fifth and became Silver Lake's third four-time state placer. Meier topped off the season with a sixth place finish.

Junior Collin Hase placed third and is now a three-time state placer. The team finished 10th at state but still boasted the title of Mid-East League champion for the fourth year in a row.

Last week, both the boys' and girls' basketball teams lost in sub-state play. The girls' chance to attend the state tournament seemed close as they progressed to round two at sub-state. Regular season play had accumulated a 10-10 win/loss record. After a 43 to 37 victory against Sabetha on Feb. 26, the team lost to Rock Creek on Feb. 28, ending their season. For the boys' basketball participants, the loss came round one against Rock Creek. The boys lost 52-63.
