State champs recognized by House, Senate

On March 1, the Silver Lake High School fall state champions were part of something that few get to experience. They were able to watch the Kansas House of Representatives and the Kansas Senate in session.
The idea for the trip came from Larry Winter, principal, and Ed Cross, a lobbyist at the capital. By using Cross as the mediator, Winter was able to organize the event with Representative Mike Burgess, Republican, and Senator Laura Kelly, Democrat.
The students watched the House of Representatives work from the gallery, and before they left, they were recognized for their state achievements, and each student received a certificate from the House.
When the seniors visited the Senate, though, they were able to stand on the floor and were also handed a copy of the resolution by the President of the Senate, Stephen Morris.
Winter said that he's happy that the students were involved because it helps the politicians look better and the students are able to learn about Congress.
"The Representatives and Senators get some good publicity and the students get to see the legislators in work," he said.
