For Amy Farlee, teaching has always been more to her than just a job. She believes that she can make a difference with her students.
Farlee came fresh out of Fort Hays State University with a major in elementary education and took the fourth-grade position that Sherma Phelps left vacant when she retired. Farlee said the reason she came to Silver Lake was that she heard it was an excellent district.
"I knew the area and had some family here, but most of all I had heard it was a great district and had a great staff," she said.
Farlee originally wanted to become a teacher because she wanted to lend a hand to kids like her teachers did.
"I've wanted to become a teacher because I had some really great teachers in grade school and high school, and they had a huge impact on me. I wanted to be able to do that for kids, too," she said.
She explained that one about the best parts of teaching at Silver Lake is that she has a wonderful staff with which to work.
"That's probably my favorite part of teaching here is that we have wonderful teachers and faculty, and they are very supportive," she said.
Farlee said that even with everyone supporting her, she's still having a hard time being a first-year teacher.
"Just being in my first year of teaching and learning all the different things is hard. Every single day I figure out what I'm not going to do next year, and I'm just learning as I go. The class, though, is great," she said.
Despite the hardships, she said that her kids help her stay happy and keep her coming back to work.
"The kids are definitely the best part because they come into the room excited and just knowing that you're teaching them something is great, too," she said.
The high school students will also get to know Coach Farlee this track season as an assistant coach to Loren Ziegler. She said that she is coaching because she loves the sport.
"When I went to college at Fort Hays, I threw javelin. I've been in track ever since I remember, and I'm big into sports," she said.
Farlee said that she was excited for track because she will be able to see some fresh faces.
"Getting to know the kids is going to be great because it's always fun to see new faces," she said.
