With voting for the bond issue just around the corner, the community is being reminded about important bond issue information through community filers and town meetings.
Voting will take place on April 3 at the Methodist Church. In a recent newsletter sent out to all members in the community, the exact ballot question has been published as follows: "Shall Unified School District No. 372, Shawnee County, Kansas (Silver Lake Schools), issue general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $7,900,000, to pay the costs to: (i) construct, furnish and equip additions to create additional classrooms for Preschool, Kindergarten, and Elementary student use and a physical education gymnasium at existing Silver Lake Grade School; (ii) make other improvements at the Silver Lake Grade School facility including improvements to the heating, ventilation, and cooling system (HVAC), improvements to parking and traffic flow areas around the facility, and upgrades for improved safety and security at the Entry and Office areas of the building; (iii) construct, furnish and equip additions to provide expanded library space and Vo-Ag space as well as construction of a connecting corridor from the main building to the Vo-Ag Building at the existing Silver Lake Junior/Senior High School; (iv) make other improvements to the Silver Lake Junior/Senior High Building including conversion of the existing library area to classroom use and upgrades for improved safety and security at the Entry and Office areas of the building; and (v) make all other necessary improvements appurtenant thereto; all pursuant to provisions of K.S.A. 10-101 et seq.; K.S.A. 25-2018(f); K.S.A. 72-6761; and K.S.A. 75-2315 et seq.?"
According to Deidre Michael, kindergarten teacher, the community meetings concerning the bond issue have brought many to ask questions and understand the issue more thoroughly.
"The turnout wasn't as high as I expected, mainly because of the various activities that occur in Silver Lake every night. The community members did bring forth a lot of questions that had not been asked, and I believe everyone walked away with knowing more. We can just hope for the best," Michael stated.
In addition to the bond issue, Silver Lake residents will also elect next year's school board members. Those running for office include current members Cindy Hill and Susan Runyan, as well as Randy Matzke, Jason P. Seele, Sean P. Teel, Doug Warren, Cori Wegner and Ron Yoder.
