On Friday, the community can preview the upcoming football, dance, cheer, and cross country teams at the first school events of the season: the soda scrimmage and first annual 100-mile relay.

The football scrimmage will begin at 7 p.m. Friday on the high school football field. Local girls who attended the cheer and pom camps this summer will be performing at this function. Admission is, as always, a can of pop.

Directly following the scrimmage will be the back-to-school senior high dance. The dance, which is hosted by the pommers, will last until midnight, and admission is $3.

The newest event this season is the 100-mile relay, which will, weather permitting, take place on the track right after the dance. Each member of the cross country team runs one mile, then passes the relay on to the next runner until they have reached 100 miles. Kevin Brokaw, second year cross country coach at Silver Lake, estimates the relay will take a little under 12 hours.

Brokaw got the idea for the relay from his own experiences in cross country.

"When I was in high school, my cross country coach had us run a 24-hour run, which is just more or less the same concept but just longer. I adapted it to be a little bit shorter with a fewer number of kids, and I've done it at one other school before," explained Brokaw.

The main purpose of the relay is to bring the team together and get the community involved in the program.

Jerod Barker, second year cross country runner, reasoned out why the event will be a success.

"I think it'll help gain support for the team because it's the first cross country event this town has seen in a long time and will attract attention," said Barker.

Brokaw informed the community on how they can get involved.

"One of the main things is to just come out at some point during the time the kids are running and encourage them, show their support, and maybe run with them a little bit," he said.

Cross country team members this year include Barker, Katie Barnes, T.G. Gideon, Peter Ruby, Cole Schwarz, Luke Ziegler, Derek Holmer, JaVon Martin, Jaeton Martin, Rachel Cross, Jeri Lyn Billings, Shannen Kolde, Audri Monteith, and Cody Bond.

Community members can also engage themselves in the cross country team by attending their meets, the first of which is on Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. at Mission Valley. For other cross country and football dates, see the school calendar.
