Team completes 100-mile relay under time

By Shelby Brokaw

August 31, 2007

Even though the Friday night soda scrimmage was canceled last week due to weather, the cross country team chugged on, all night. As previously reported, a new pre-season event has emerged at the high school: the 100-mile relay. During the relay, which lasted 11 hours and 37 minutes, each team member ran a mile in turn, then passed on the baton.

The relay was met with positive remarks from the team.

Rachel Cross, sophomore cross country runner, observed, "…the team as a whole bonded together and have stronger relationships with each other, including Coach Brokaw."

Kevin Brokaw, cross country coach, agreed with Cross's statement.

"The main goals were to complete the task or complete the miles in less than 12 hours, which we did, for everybody to run hard during that time, have fun, and build some team unity, and I think we've accomplished that, too," said Brokaw.

The relay began with senior cross country member T.G. Gideon. Each runner ran about seven miles throughout the course of the relay and the average mile time was seven minutes and eight seconds, which varied only slightly as the relay went on. Freshman Audri Monteith finished up the long night by leading the entire team on their last mile at, you guessed it, 11:37 a.m.

As for which mile was their hardest, opinions varied.

"The hardest mile would definitely be the very last one because it was our seventh mile and we had been up all night," said Cross.

"The fifth mile because I knew that I had already done half of them, and I was not ready for the rest," contrasted Gideon.

The team's first cross country meet was yesterday, Aug. 30, at 4 p.m. at Mission Valley. Sophomores Jerod Barker and Peter Ruby medaled as they placed second and eighth, respectively. The team took fourth place in the meet.

The squad used the 100-mile relay to prepare for this and other meets. Brokaw commented on how the relay was beneficial.

"It let me see some of the runners run individually… which I hadn't been able to see yet. The difficulty of running that often over that period of time helped us get prepared for our early meets," stated Brokaw.

Brokaw was gratified with the support the community gave the team.

He mentioned, "I'd like to thank everybody that helped make it work and everybody who showed up to support the team."
