Long-standing tradition uprooted

The high school has seen many changes this year, but one change has been harder for students to accept. The Student Council recently voted that King and Queen of Winter Sports, a long-standing school tradition, will not take place this year.
According to Mary LaMar, StuCo sponsor, a number of factors contributed to this decision.
"Each year, we have less and less participation by the student body, and a lot of times, it was because of the timing of it. Second semester, traditionally, the seniors are only here for one hour of the day, so they weren't that excited about it. A lot of times it's right after Christmas break, so it's really hard to schedule and get the word out to the student body. I think it was just an apathetic kind of view by the student body and the candidates," said LaMar.
Although there will be no King and Queen of Winter Sports this year, LaMar stated there would still be a sponsored event during the winter. It has not been decided what this event will be, but StuCo is considering a variety of options, including a dance.
The elimination of King and Queen will also bring changes to Homecoming. Two candidates, one boy and one girl, were added to Homecoming to give more students the opportunity to be involved.
LaMar felt that this change would be hardest for the seniors to accept, but that it was a change for the better.
"I think it was time for a change... I think as an adult, it's much better to do away with it, and we can still have the dance... I really hope we just try it one year and see, and if we need to, we can vote it back in," she said.
Many students also believe that the change is for the better. Michelle Taylor, senior StuCo member, said that as a senior, she was disappointed by the change, but she also thought it was an excellent idea to not have it.
Jerod Barker, StuCo vice president, also expressed his feelings about the change.
"I think it's a good idea because participation had been declining for years, according to other StuCo members, and it was time for a change."
Other students have different opinions. Junior Hannah Hansen was upset with the decision to eliminate King and Queen of Winter Sports.
"I don't agree with the decision of taking away King and Queen of Winter Sports because it is a tradition, not just to the students, but for the entire community. A lot of people come that night to watch the ceremony even if they don't have kids in school, and most people really look forward to it. I think since the decision wasn't really made by the students, a lot of students I know are disappointed that we aren't having it this year, including me," she explained.

| 10/18/2007 | I believe that this article was very well written. The only problem is that I disagree with the article, whoever doesn't feel like taking part in King and Queen of Winter Sports shouldn't have to. But for those who would like to keep and Eagle tradition should keep this going. I believe that you should take a poll of the High School Student Body and see who would like to keep the tradition going and who wouldn't. | Bri crazy_bri_2010@yahoo.com School |
| 11/01/2007 | As a SL Alum I think it is sad that the King and Queen of Winter Sports has been dropped. I was a queen candidate 30 yrs. ago and still remember that evening. How sad that a new generation won't experience that magic. I guess it's a different world now. |
