Homecoming festivities approaching

Students will be showing up at school dressed in togas, poodle skirts, and cowboy hats during the week of Sept. 24-28. Homecoming is on the way, and with it comes a return to the past.

The Student Council decided on "Time Travel" as the Homecoming theme. But with this year’s theme comes the newest occurrence at Silver Lake. Because of the cutting of King and Queen of Winter Sports, a fourth couple has been added to the Homecoming royalty.

Jerod Barker, StuCo vice president, does not believe the new candidates will bring about any major modifications.

"The extra candidates won't cause any big changes, just more pies in the face or another Firebird in the parade," commented Barker.

The student body selected the following as its Homecoming nominees: Whitney Gillman, Amanda Pfannenstiel, Myranda Hanson, Sara Wetzel, Logan Pegram, Marshall Wetta, Josh Baden, and Garrett Cummings.

To be nominated as a candidate is a great honor noted by achievement and reputation.

"It feels like a nice privilege to be thought of and voted for, while at the same time, I'd like to have seen other people nominated," stated Wetta.

Each of the nominees will be featured in the Homecoming video put together by the video production staff and presented to the high school on friday at 8:40 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center. The theme for this year's video is "The Oscars."

Wetzel said that the video is what she is anticipating the most.

"I'm looking forward to making the video because it seems like it will be a lot of fun," stated Wetzel.

Each day leading up to Friday's celebration will follow the time travel theme. Students are encouraged to dress up according to the theme of the day. On Monday, the theme is “Toga Day,” Tuesday is “Wild West Day,” Wednesday is “ ’50s Day,” Thursday is “Hippie Day,” and Friday is “Maroon and Gold Day.”

Friday's schedule has been altered to better accommodate for the Homecoming events.

For the high school, seminar will begin at 7:55 a.m. and last until 8:15 a.m., first hour will span from 8:20 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., second hour will go from 9:35 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., third hour will last from 10:50 a.m. until 12:25 a.m., and the day will end with fourth block lasting from 12:30 p.m. until 1:05 p.m. First lunch will last from 10:45 a.m. until 11:10 a.m. and second lunch from 11:30 a.m. until 11:55 a.m.

For the junior high, seminar will begin at 7:55 a.m. and last until 8:15 a.m., first hour will span from 8:20 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., second hour will go from 9:35 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., lunch will last from 10:50 a.m. until 12:25 a.m., fourth block will go from 12:25 p.m. until 1:40 p.m. At 1:40 p.m. all junior high students will head over to the parade and pep rally. Any junior high students wishing to take part in the parade can be dismissed at 1:50 p.m. or later by either having a parent call the office or by bringing a note.

The parade will begin at 1:45 p.m. and will be followed by the pep rally. The Foundation Cookout and the crowning will both be right before the game against Wabaunsee, which begins at 7 p.m. Directly following the game and lasting until midnight will be the high school Homecoming dance sponsored by StuCo. Admission to the dance is $3.

This year's candidates, students, and other participants in the Homecoming festivities, just as those in the past, are awaiting the celebration of the season. After all, who wouldn't want to wear beads and let their hair hang low like a flower child?

10/05/2007 i think that king and queen of winter sports shouldn't have been removed because it is a tradition and this school is all about tradition and i know a lot of people think the same thing "who ever said that it should go is stupid"
