Booster Club shows signs of revival

By Colby Killinger

September 14, 2007

Last year, the Booster Club dismantled because the executive members’ children were graduating, and they felt like it was time to pass on the torch. Jacque Taylor, former six-year president, announced that if someone didn't step up and take on the responsibility, then the Booster Club would dissolve. No one did. However, this year, Lynette Renfro, Silver Lake parent, has raised awareness for reviving the Booster Club and is spearheading the project.

"We just want to bring a lot more to the school and its activities and continue the tradition of the Booster Club," commented Renfro.

She said as of now, there are posters hanging up in local businesses, fliers being distributed at home games and to students, and a lot of word-of-mouth communicating to raise awareness about the “new” Booster Club. Generally speaking, she said there has been a lot of support from the community.

"Dana Kruger has said that she would commit her time to being a member. Shayla Boyd is doing all my paperwork and fliers. Hopefully we'll be able to get Duke Kisner involved because he's been an important member in the past. I don't know. We've compiled a list of about 30 or so names of people who said that they'd be interested,” said Renfro.

The previous Booster Club was ran primarily by four members who devoted their time.

She said there is a lot of discussion going on right now concerning funding and what events need to be sponsored. There is discussion of having a booster bash and selling tickets to go to a dinner and dance event to raise revenue. The Booster Club also plans to start running the gates again at local sporting events.

Renfro said that there is still a lot of organization that needs to happen and nothing is set in stone. However, the first meeting is Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in the high school commons.
