The high school varsity volleyball team and the high school boys’ cross country team will both be competing for state titles this weekend.
The varsity volleyball team competed at sub-state on Saturday, Oct. 20. They defeated Rossville 25-18 and 25-14, Nemaha Valley 25-12 and 25-22, and Rock Creek 26-24 and 25-23. These wins placed the team as the third seed at the state tournament this weekend.
The girls will play Friday, Oct. 26 at the Bicentennial Center in Salina at 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and at 12:30 p.m. As long as the team makes it to the top two in their pool then they will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. If they would win that match, they would play for the championship title at 11:30 a.m.

The boys’ cross country team competed at regionals on Saturday, Oct. 20. The seven boys who competed at regionals and who will be competing at state are Jerod Barker, Peter Ruby, Luke Ziegler, Jaeton Martin, Cole Schwarz, T.G. Gideon, and Derek Holmer. Coach Kevin Brokaw said that JaVon Martin and Cody Bond are also listed as alternates and can be subbed in if necessary.
At regionals, Barker clinched first place with a time of 18:12, and Ruby place fourth with a time of 18:42. The boys' team captured third place out of eight teams.
This is the first time in 13 years that Silver Lake has had a cross country team qualify for the state meet, and a piece of history is repeating itself. Jake Schwarz was a member of the 1994 Silver Lake cross country team that made it to the state meet, and his brother Cole is a current state participant.
The state cross country meet will be on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Wamego Country Club. The 3A boys’ race will start at 12:30 p.m., and the awards ceremony will start at 1:30 p.m. The top 20 individual finishers will be awarded medals, and the top three teams from each race will receive trophies and team medals.
The admission price will be $4 for students K-12 and $5 for adults. For a map of the state race course, go to http://www.usd320.com/Sports/CrossCountry/xc_map.jpg.
