Silver Lake student wins FFA Proficiency award

by Logan Pegram

March 07, 2008

When Future Farmers of America instructor, Rick Blush, approached sophomore Lucas Russell to enter the North East Kansas FFA Beef Proficiency contest, sophomore Russell was put in an awkward position, as this seemed to be a bit overwhelming. Lucas accepted this daunting task with no hesitation. Lucas put in almost 15 hours a week on his winning application.

“A Proficiency award which Lukas won is a great honor. Lukas, only a sophomore, was at a disadvantage. Most winners are junior and seniors which makes winning the award that much better,” said Mr. Blush.

There have been a few other students winning this award.  There have been 8 FFA

Members receiving this prestigious award over the last five years, with two state winners.

After achieving this distinguished honor Lucas will advance onto the state competition. This is where Lucas will have his stiffest competition.  There will be seven other competitors at the state competition.

When asked what to expect of the up coming competition. Lukas has no fear when approaching the state contest.

“I cant wait to go out and prove myself, I have had a lot of practice and I just can’t wait to win state.”
