On Thursday, March 13, cheerleading and pompon tryouts were held in the Silver Lake High School gym. Paulina Rudolph, senior, and Megan Richards, senior, taught the cheers, and Kali Arney, senior, Jaimie Tosh, senior, and Amie Worthington, former Silver Lake pommer, taught the dances prior to the tryouts.
According to Carolyn Worthington, pom sponsor, they had four judges from Washburn University and two from the University of Kansas select 12 girls for junior high cheerleading, 14 for high school football, 12 for high school basketball, and 10 for high school pompon. The girls where chosen based on teacher evaluations and judge evaluations.
Kerry Dick, junior pommer, said she thinks the best part of tryouts is practicing and getting ready.
“ I’m never really nervous for tryouts. It’s after we try out that I get nervous because you actually know how you did, and it’s anticipating the results that gets your adrenaline pumping,” Dick stated.
Carolyn Worthington, pompon sponsor, felt that the tryouts went extremely well. “Tryouts are always stressful, but overall, things went smoothly,” said Worthington.
She said the pommers have already chosen uniforms and are currently deciding on camp outfits. This year, they are attending a smaller NDA camp at Emporia State University because they were the smallest squad at their elite camp last year. The camp they attended last year was at ESU also, but this time it will be a different date and it will be for small squads. Their NDA camp is also being combined with NCA cheer camp.
Cheerleading will be a new avenue for some, like freshman Ellyn Field. She said that she was excited for the upcoming basketball season so she can support the teams.
“I’m looking forward to being able to hang out with all my friends and go to all the basketball games,” stated Field.
