During this time of year, Senior Whitney Gillman can be found between second and third base on the softball field. She is Silver Lake's starting shortstop and has been for four years straight.
“I like shortstop because I'm involved in every play. Plus, I get to do some cool footwork on second base,” she said.
Gillman's softball career began long before she was playing for the Lady Eagles. She started softball when she was five, and it quickly became her favorite sport. Gillman admits she probably wouldn't be as successful as she is in softball if it weren't for her parents and all their support.
“My parents have really helped me out a lot with softball. They can tell I love playing, and it helps that they like watching me play,” she said.
Her parents have plenty to cheer about. She received all-league her sophomore and junior years and all-state her junior year. In addition to these honors, Gillman has created many fond memories.
“Beating McLouth in regionals last year was really a high point for me and the team. My junior year was my best year in my opinion because the team made it to the state championship game,” said Gillman.
As a senior, Gillman is expected to be a leader for the younger players. That doesn't mean there aren't other girls on the team she admires.
“Brittany Workman is just an amazing player. I love her energy out on the field. She gives 110 percent every second during practices and games,” Gillman said.
Gillman is one of three seniors on the 2008 softball team. This isn't Gillman's last year of softball, though. She is going to Cloud Community College on a softball scholarship. She's excited that she’s about to go off on her own but admits there is one aspect she will miss.
“I'm going to miss getting to play with all my friends the most,” she said.
