The Silver Lake pom squad attended the Emporia Elite Camp this summer. They also hosted the little girls' dance camp at the Silver Lake Lyons's Park for any little girl who wanted to learn some dance moves.

Senior Sarah Ables attended both of these events. She explained what she and her fellow pommers learned while at camp.

"We learned some new leaps and how to critique our moves better. We also learned some Elite team dances and some individual dances. The biggest thing we learned was how to work together as a team," she said.

All of the Silver Lake pommers attended the camp, as well as Hayden High School and some small schools from all around Kansas.

The team received team and individual awards while at camp.

"We won showmanship awards, team leadership awards, and a bunch of other dance awards. Also, Miranda Stromgren, Jennifer Rosebaugh, and Taylor Nocktonick, sophomores, all won All-American ribbons," Ables said.

Many memories will be with Ables forever, but one stuck out in her mind.

"My most memorable moment at camp was when we won all the awards on the very last day, and we got to bring home a lot of hardware," she said.

The high school girls also got the chance to teach local girls some moves and different dances. Ables shared some of her favorite parts of hosting this camp.

"My favorite part of the little girls' dance camp was keeping track of 30-35 little girls and seeing how much they enjoyed the camp. My least favorite part was all the screaming little girls asking a lot of questions," she said.

Each pommer got a say in what they were going to teach the little girls.

"We taught the girls easy pom moves that they would be able to do, and we also made up a simple, easy dance for them to learn," she said.

The little girls performed with the pommers during the soda scrimmage. They performed "The Spirit Dance."

"I could tell that the little girls enjoyed the camp because they were always high spirited, and they seemed like they had a lot of fun while at camp," she concluded.
