Math skills put to test

December 08, 2008

Ten pre-calculus students competed at the 2008 Washburn Math Day on Nov. 4.

According to Alan Cunningham, high school math instructor, the competition consisted of a 40-question, multiple choice test taken by all participating students. One hour was given to complete the test. Calculators were not allowed.

A team score was calculated by adding the top three individual scores from the respective school. The Silver Lake team of Lindsey Schroeder, junior; Jay McDaniel, senior; and Adam Wetzel, senior, scored a combined 80 points, earning them the runner-up title in the Class 3-2-1A division. Maur Hill took first with a score of 94.

Cunningham said Silver Lake's score was 12 points better than 4A division winner Hayden.

Schroeder received a medal for scoring third highest among non-seniors.
