High School

Spring comedy hits stage

By Chelsea Reid

February 10, 2009

This year’s spring comedy is “The Comic Book Artist.” The performance will be on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. at the high school.

The directors this year are Mary Larson, English teacher, and Michelle Cross, parent.

The cast this year is the largest that Larson has directed in her 13 years as play director. There are a total of 42 students participating in the play this year.

"I chose this play because it has many characters who are important to the plot, and the script is rich in the number of roles available.

“It is always a challenge to find a play to do that accommodates a large cast and this year’s cast is the largest in the 13 years I have directed here,” said Larson.

She said the story line of the play is about Stanley Leonardo Sappovitz who wants nothing more than to become a comic book artist. When he gets a job as a janitor at Wonder Comics, he anxiously awaits the day that his boss, D.C. Wunderman, will notice his drawings and discover his artistic genius.

Larson said it seems like that day will never come until Wunderman invests in a shipment of magical pens, guaranteed to bring to life any character his artists create. When the staff artists unwittingly unleash the dreaded Doctor Shock Clock, it is up to Stanley to create his own team of super heroes. Doctor Shock Clock is off to Times Square to pull off the greatest heist of all time.

Junior Jerod Barker plays Sappovitz. Also playing a leading role is Junior Joe Priddy, Dr. Shock Clock, and Senior Jenna Yoder as Viola. Larson said there are 65 characters played by 42 actors.

Junior Rachel Cross plays Blossom, an environmentalist super hero who comes to life from Sappovitz’s magic pens.

“I think I will like playing Blossom because she is different than all the other characters I have played in Silver Lake productions, and I’m always looking for a challenge,” said Cross.

Priddy said that as an actor he wants to make people laugh, and he thinks that he relates to his character well.

“ I relate to my character because we both think that we rule the world,” said Priddy.

Senior Hannah Hansen will be playing Wombat Woman, a super hero, and a Supreme Dream Super hero, an imaginary dancing character.

“ I think that I will enjoy playing both my characters a lot because they are funny and crazy, and I enjoy wearing puffy fur coats,” said Hansen.

To make a play successful, Larson said that students must be dedicated, hard working, and commit their time.

“I want the students to become the best performers they can be. I want the cast to grow intellectually and to enjoy the theatre. It is always a joy to watch actors and actresses develop their art. I look forward to watching their production when it is polished and to enjoy the talent we have here at Silver Lake,” said Larson.

Tickets are $6 for students and senior citizens and $7 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the door beginning at 1:15 p.m. on the day of the production.
