After Jim Lindstrom, Silver Lake Junior/Senior High School assistant principal and athletic director, announced his retirement effective at the end of the current school year, the school board began a search to fill his shoes. Ninety-two people applied for the job, and five people interviewed.
Brad Womack, SLHS alumnus, current math teacher and coach, was hired. Larry Winter, principal, said he believed Womack has all the qualities needed for the job.
“First of all, they needed to have an athletic background, either by coaching or being an athletic director at another school. They needed to be a visionary person, and just having experience was helpful,” said Winter.
Committee members interviewed Womack. The committee included Randy Matzke, board member; Cindy Hawkins, board member; Alan Cunningham, math teacher; Gail Naylor, English teacher; Winter; and Dr. Randy Freeman, superintendent.
Winter said Womack was chosen for the job based on his qualifications and leadership role in the school.
“He was chosen for a number of reasons. Mr. Womack has taken a leadership role and has been active as curriculum chair. He has done a lot of things that have really helped the curriculum and test scores.
“He’s been involved in a wide variety of activities including coaching track, softball, and basketball. He’s also been student council sponsor for a number of years. He’s a well-rounded individual and had a great vision for the future of Silver Lake. I think that really helped make him stand out during the interviewing process,” stated Winter.
Womack said he chose to apply for the job so he could help students in more than just the classroom.
“I’m looking forward to the freedom to get out in the school and see all students interacting in different ways,” said Womack.
Womack said he will miss teaching math but hopes he will be able to see other aspects of the school.
“I hope to see more than just my students in my class, for example, (in) the art department, journalism, or others,” stated Womack.
