Students excel at various league competitions

There are many Silver Lake students who have participated in league competitions lately and have done very well.
On Feb. 25, Tonya McGough, vocal teacher, took students to the league music competition. The ratings were “1” for outstanding, “2” for excellent, “3” for average, “4” for poor, and “5” for ineffective.
The men’s ensemble and vocal soloists Rachel Cross, Kayleen Kelley, Peter Ruby, Derek Holmer, and Ashley Williams all received “1” ratings. The groups that received “2” ratings were concert choir, select choir, women’s ensemble, and vocal soloists Amanda Soudek, Abbey Killinger, Kayla Shaughnessy, Autumn Runyan, Jamie Pfannenstiel, and Evan Altman.
League band was judged the same way as the vocal competition. The musicians receiving a “1” rating in competition were Large Group: Band; Clarinet Quartet - Kelsey Darling, Killinger, Annie Landis, and Rachel Brokaw; Saxophone Quartet - Shaughnessy, Weston Nelson, Sadie McGough, and Becca Holder; Trumpet Trio - Riley Oblander, Altman, and Kelley; Brass Trio - Josh Pladies, Oblander, and Ruby; Percussion Ensemble - JaVon Martin, Tyler Corber, Williams, Jacob Schroeder, Sarah Tripp, Kelley, Pladies, Nelson, Greg Davis, and Ruby; Soloists - Briana Thompson in Flute, Sarah Ables in Oboe, Killinger in Clarinet, Jaeton Martin in bary saxophone, Oblander in trumpet, Altman in trumpet, Ruby in trumpet and trombone; JaVon Martin in snare drum; and Corber in snare drum.
The musicians receiving a “2” rating in competition were Small Ensembles; Flute Quartet - Thompson, Karley Dick, Tripp, and Danielle Larson; and Darling in Clarinet.
Art instructor Tiffany Wiles and her students hosted Mid-East League Art on March 4.
Eighty students from seven schools competed in categories including watercolor pencil, clay masks, slip stickers, photography, and woodcarving. Among Silver Lake’s competitors, sophomore Jenny Rosebaugh placed third in pencil novice with her drawing of Blake Lively and honorable mention with another drawing. Junior Jestina Matulka captured first in tempera painting.On March 10, Gail Naylor and her forensics students hosted the Mid-East League Speech tournament. Rock Creek beat Silver Lake for sweepstakes by 19 points. Rossville was third. The results were as follows: JaVon Martin – Extemporaneous League Champion; Shelby Brokaw – Oratory League Champion; Colby Haverkamp – third in Oratory; Sadie McGough – third in Informative; Jacob Schroeder – fourth in Informative, and third in Extemporaneous; Kyle Klucas – fifth in Humorous Solo Acting; Jake Maryott – fifth in Serious Solo Acting; Jay McDaniel/ Matt McClain – third in Duet Acting; Josh Pladies/ Riley Oblander – second in Duet Acting; Stephanie Carroll – sixth in Poetry Interpretation; Dylan Holthaus – third in Prose Interpretation; and Kyle Klucas/ Riley Oblander – fourth in Improvised Duet Acting.

The forensics squad has been busy qualifying students to state and national tournaments.The students who qualified for state speech on May 2 were Brokaw in Oration, Martin in Extemporaneous, and Pladies and Oblander in Duet Acting.
The students who qualified for the state festival were McGough in Informative, Haverkamp in Oratory, and Holthaus in Prose Interpretation.
