The preseason events Friday will begin with the volleyball sports drink scrimmage at 5 p.m. The team will compete in multiple matches, rotating players in and out. Admission is one sports drink per attendee.
The football soda scrimmage will begin at 7 p.m. The event will take place on the CJ Hamilton Field, and admission is one can of soda per individual. High school football coach CJ Hamilton is hoping for another successful year and expressed optimism at the team's prospects.
"I think we will be pretty good. We've got a lot of our returning linemen, and hopefully the junior class will step up and fill some skill position," stated Hamilton.
Hamilton thanked the band, cheerleaders, pommers, and Booster Club for their support throughout the season.
Local girls who attended the Little Girls Camp hosted by the high school cheer and dance squads this summer will perform during the scrimmage. They will join the cheerleaders on the track during the first part of the game and perform a dance with the pommers on the field at halftime.
From 9 p.m. until midnight, the high school back-to-school dance will take place in the commons area. The pommers are hosting the dance as a fundraiser, and admission is $3.
Directly following the dance will be the 100-mile relay, a fairly new event. For the third year in a row, the cross country team will run into the night until they complete 100 miles as a team. Cross country coach Kevin Brokaw believes it is important for the community to get to know the team and encourage them as they enter the season.
"We have quite a few seniors on this year's team, and I would like to see the school and the community support them for their hard work," said Brokaw.
Hamilton pointed out the importance of attending these preseason events.
He explained, "(It is important) just for support, for the opportunity to see the kids, and to get excited about the environment. It's the first thing that comes about that is kind of a social event, so it's important to get off on the right foot."
