Homecoming events announced

October 03, 2009
Homecoming is fast approaching and the
week leading up to it promises to be full of fun and activity. Not
only does this event serve as a tribute to the football season, but
it also serves as an opportunity for students to exhibit their
pride in Silver Lake High School.
Student Council decided on “Woodstock
Revisited” for the Homecoming theme this year. Throughout the week,
students are encouraged to dress up in coordination with that day’s
theme. The best-dressed participant each day will be admitted to
the game free on Friday and be awarded tickets to the concessions
stand. Monday’s theme will be Hippie Day (dress like they did in
the 1960s), Tuesday’s theme will be The Music (dress like your
favorite music artist), Wednesday’s theme will be Flower Power
(adorn yourself in flowers and peace signs), Thursday’s theme will
be Sign My Guitar (wear something that can be written on and bring
a marker to have your friends sign it), and Friday’s theme is the
traditional Spirit Day (show off all of your maroon and gold
apparel).
Festivities will begin on Oct. 4 with hall
decorating from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. High school
students are encouraged to come and adorn their class’s hall in its
designated color. The freshman hallway will be in neon orange, the
sophomore hallway will be in neon blue, the junior hallway will be
in neon pink, and the senior hallway will be in neon green.
Materials will not be supplied, so students should bring their
own.
On Monday, Oct. 5, a game of Capture the
Falcon will follow the junior varsity football game. The location
has yet to be decided. There will be four teams; one for each
class, and the winning class will get the privilege of cutting to
the front of the lunch line for the remainder of the week.
Student Council added a car bash to the
list of activities during Homecoming this season. The bash will
take place on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the high school
parking lot. Those interested will need to pay one dollar for every
30 seconds of bashing to the host vehicle. Senior fall athletes
will receive one free hit each.
On Oct. 9, Friday, the high school will get
the chance to view the Homecoming video in the performing arts
center at 8 a.m. Voting will take place at this time. Family
members of the candidates are also invited to attend.
Friday, the lunch schedule will see some
minor variations. Junior high lunch will remain the same, but first
high school lunch will take place at 12:05 p.m., and second high
school lunch will be at 12:35 p.m.
All high school students and any junior
high students participating in the parade will be released for the
Homecoming parade at 1:00 p.m. All other junior high and grade
school students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. The parade will
occur at 1:45 p.m. It will begin on the west side of town on
Highway 24, continue on East Pottawatomie Street, pass the grade
school on Rice Road, and end at the high school after moving on to
Lake Street. If anyone would like to enter a float in the parade,
they must call the high school office and provide a contact name
and number. Directly following the parade will be a pep rally, open
to the public, at the CJ Hamilton Football Field.
Friday’s game will begin at 7 p.m. against
Riley County. The crowning ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. The
candidates are Seniors Joe Priddy, Drake Pino, Brady Abrahams, Jace
Lowe, Randi Richards, Bailey Krogman, Amanda Lewis, and Kailey
Priddy.
Following the football game, student
council will be hosting a high school dance. It will last from 9
p.m. until midnight, and admission is three dollars. This will
conclude the long week of Homecoming celebrations.
